Donations Guideline

IRS Rules for Clothing and Household Items

To be deductible, clothing and household items donated to charity after Aug. 17, 2006 must be in good used condition or better.  However, a taxpayer may claim a deduction of more than $500 for a single item, regardless of its condition if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the return. Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances, and linens.  See

  • Books
  • Bedding
  • Usable furniture                                                               
  • Home electronics
  • Jewelry   
  • Housewares
  • And many other things for the home

  • Sorry, we are unable to accept the following:
  • Large or built-in appliances
  • Wet, moldy, or greasy clothing or items
  • Tires and wheels
  • Furniture needing repairs or in unusable condition         
  • Sleeper sofas
  • Water beds including parts and accessories                   
  • Batteries
  • Bunk beds that are incomplete or do not meet *CPSC* standards  
  • Household cleaners
  • Pianos or organs                                              
  • Console TV’s, stereos, CRT’s and non-working appliances
  • Paints and solvents                                          
  • Anything with freon
  • *CPSC* recalled items                                     
  • Large metal or wood desks
  • Items banned from sales                                  
  • Electronics from businesses (large quantities)
  • carpets or pieces of carpet
